Structure of Matter

(Pop-Quiz) Science-Davis

TermDefinition
Element A substance make of only one type of atom
Matter Anything that takes up space and has mass
Molecule A particle made of two or more atoms, chemically combined
Compound A substance made of molecules formed by two or more different types of atoms chemically combined
Chemical Formula Formula for a substance that includes the chemical symbols and number of atoms for each element
Chemical Symbol A unique symbol made of one or two letters that represents an element (1st letter: capitalized 2nd letter: lowercase)
Mixture Matter made up of different substances
Metal Type of element in which its atoms GIVE UP electrons to other atoms during bonding
Non-Metal Type of element in which its atom TAKE electrons from other atoms during bonding
Metalloid Type of element that has unique characteristics of both a metal and a non-metal
Examples of Matter vs. Non-Matter -car -feelings -book -sound
Atoms A substance, the basic unit of a chemical element
Types of Element Maps -Bohr Diagram -Lewis Structure -Graph -Positive /Negative Charge of Atoms -Block of Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons
Protons Charge: Positive Location: Inside the nucleus
Neutrons Charge: Negative Location: Inside the nucleus
Electrons Charge: None Location: Around the nucleus
Extended Structure Two or more atoms that react and form crystalline structures Are metals, can have non-metals
Ion An atom that has gained or lost eletrons
Three Types of Bonds -Covalent: Share -Ionic: Give/Take -Metallic: Removed (moves in a current)
Groups How many electrons are in the outside shell
Periods Number of electron shells in an atom
Equation to find neutrons Mass-Protons=Neutrons

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
