Rhetorical Terms

| alliteration | it occurs when two or more words are linked that share the same first consonant sound, such as “fish fry.” |
| allusion | an implied or indirect reference to a person, event, or thing or to a part of another text |
| analogy | a comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification |
| antithesis | a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else |
| consonance | agreement or compatibility between opinions or actions |
| diction | the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing |
| ellipsis | to indicate the omission of words or suggest an incomplete thought |
| ethos | conveys the author's credibility and knowledge about the topic at hand |
| hyperbole | exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally |
| imagery | language that suggests how someone or something looks, sounds, feels, smells, or tastes |
| irony | the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect |
| oxymoron | a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (organized chaos) |
| pathos | pathos appeals to the emotions, trying to make the audience feel angry or sympathetic |
| personification | the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form |
| symbol/symbolism | a figure of speech that is used when an author wants to create a certain mood or emotion in a work of literature |
