Rhetorical Terms

| Alliteration | the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. |
| Allusion | an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. |
| Analogy | a comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification. |
| Antithesis | opposition; contrast |
| Consonance | harmony or agreement |

| Hyperbole | exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. |

| Imagery | visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work. |
| Irony | the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. |
| Oxymoron | a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g. faith unfaithful kept him falsely true ). |
| Pathos | a quality that evokes pity or sadness. |
| Personification | the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. |
| Symbol/Symbolism | the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. |
