Scientific Revolution (Scientists and Terms)

| Geocentric | Earth is the center of the universe |
| Copernicus | Believed the earth was round (sphere). Created the heliocentric view. Did not publish his findings until right before he died due to fear of heresy. |
| Heliocentric | Earth rotates on an axis around the sun. |
| Heresy | Going against the Catholic Church's teachings. One could be excommunicated or burned alive. |
| Renaissance | 15th-16th Century following the Middle (Dark) Ages. Cultural rebirth, that inspired curiosity in everything. |
| Reformation | Occurred during the 1500s where many religious groups separated from the DOMINANT Roman Catholic Church. |
| Johannes Kepler | Posted mathematical proof that the planets orbited in ellipses (not circles) and at different speeds. |
| Galileo | Invented the telescope and discovered moons of Jupiter. Went to trial for heresy because his published book went against the Catholic Church and was forced to RECANT his beliefs. Established the universal laws of physics. |
| Francis Bacon | Helped develop the scientific method. |
| Scientific Method | Method used to confirm findings and to prove or disprove a hypothesis. |
| Rene Descartes | One of the fathers of modern philosophy. "I think, therefore I am." |
| Isaac Newton | Developed the theory of gravity and calculus. Also developed the three laws of motion. |
| Robert Boyle | Established chemistry as a pure science. Discovered the existence of oxygen. |
| Boyle's Law | Explains how the volume, temperature, and pressure of gas affect each other. |
| Adreas Vesalius | Father of anatomy. Dissected human bodies to learn about them. |
| William Harvey | Discovered that blood circulates throughout the body, pumped by the hear and returning through veins. |
