Legislative Branch

Here are the definitions for the Legislative Branch

QuestionAnswer
Constituents People that members of congress represent.
Bill A proposed law.
Interest Groups Groups that have similar goals or hobbies and want to see those goals or hobbies protected.
Lobbyist A person who represents an interest group.
Political Party An organization that agrees on how the government should run and tries to elect people with similar beliefs to government office.
Senate House of congress based on equal representation for each state. Most stable house of congress because members serve for 6 year terms.
House of Representatives House of congress where a state's representation is based on population of the state.
Congressional District The area that a member of the House of Representatives represents.
Census A count of the US population taken every 10 years to determine how many representatives each state gets in the House of Representatives.
Ex Post Facto Law Law that makes a particular act a crime and then punishes people who committed the act before the law was passed. Congress cannot pass these.
Veto When the president rejects a bill
Pocket Veto When the president lets a bill sit on his desk for 10 days, during those 10 days, Congress ends their session.
Filibuster A long, drawn out speech in the Senate, intended to prevent a vote on a bill.
Cloture A vote taken it the Senate to stop the debate on a bill or stop a filibuster.
Gerrymandering Drawing the boundaries of legislative districts in unusual shapes to favor one party over another.
President of the Senate JD Vance (Vice President) Serves as the presiding officer of the Senate. Cannot partake in debates. Only votes if there is a tie.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. Serves as the presiding officer of the House of Representatives. Leads discussions and assigns bill to committees.
President Pro Tempore Serves in the Vice Presidents position as President of the Senate when the Vice President cannot be in attendance. Chuck Grassley
