Poetry vs. Prose

Review each characteristic to determine whether it describes poetry or prose.

Poetry Packs an emotional punch.
Poetry Can have super strict form or follow specific rules.
Poetry Can be formless or not follow specific rules.
Poetry Includes figurative language.
Poetry May have specific rhythm (beat) or rhyme scheme.
Poetry May NOT rhyme AKA Free-verse poetry.
Poetry May deviate or go away from the standard convention rules AKA missing periods or end punctuation, missing capital letters, etc.
Prose Written in sentences and paragraphs.
Prose Straightforward
Prose Follows grammatical rules and non negotiables (use of punctuation, grammar, and capital letters)
