Sub-Saharan A term meaning below or South of the Sahara Desert

Mansa Musa Malian king who was known for his wealth. Made a famous pilgrimage to Mecca as a Muslim
Hajj Arabic word meaning pilgrimage; Muslims make a religious journey to Mecca as part of their faith
Trans-Atlantic A term used to describe the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, typically when describing the Slave Trade
Animism The religious belief that spirits live in nature and humans should be worshipping them
Civilization An advanced, organized society that includes aspects such as: writing, government, language, religion, innovations
Traditional A practice or belief that has been continually done for many generations
Geography The physical or environmental features and locations of the planet.
Mali Empire West African empire that grew rich from Trans-Saharan trade
Indian Ocean network Maritime trade network that connected Eastern Africa, the Middle East, and Asian continent; famous for monsoons
East-African city states City states that participated in maritime trade and developed Swahili culture due to their interactions with foreign merchants
Middle Passage The torturous part of the journey of Africans who had been sold into slavery for Europeans in the Americas
Triangle Trade Exchange between Europe, Africa, and the Americas developed as part of the Trans-Atlantic network
Ibn Battuta Muslim traveler and writer who met Mansa Musa and was important in describing ancient civilizations
Great Zimbabwe Sub Saharan civilization famous for its city walls and its trade connections with East Africa
Benin Sub Saharan civilization famous for its bronze statues and art
West African Kingdoms Ghana, Mali, and Songhai became rich from Trans-Saharan trade in Gold & Salt
