| What is the function of the cell membrane? | It controls the entry and exit of materials in the cell |
| What is the ribosome? | The site where proteins are produced |
| What is the endoplasmic reticulum? | A network of channels that move materials through the cell |
| What is the nucleus? | The control cenre of the cell |
| What is cytoplasm? | A jelly-like substance that fills the inside of a cell. |
| What is the function of the vacuole? | It stores water, nutrients and wastes in the cell |
| What are mitochondria? | The site of cellular respiration (uses food and oxygen to make energy, caarbon dioxide and water). |
| What is chloroplast? | The site of photosynthesis (uses sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to produce food and oxygen). |
| What is the function of the golgi body? | To sort proteins and packs them into vesicles |
| What is osmosis? | Water particles that diffuse througha selectively permeable membrane. They move from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration. |
| What are bacteria? | Single celled micro-organisms that can be harmful (by causing disease) or helpful (in digestion). |
| What is concentration? | The amount of a substance in a given space. |
| Where do cells make their energy? | In the mitochondria. |
| What is an example of a prokaryotric cell? | Bacteria. They are smaller than eukaryotic cells. |
| What is an example of a eukaryotic cell? | Plant and animal cells. They are bigger than prokaryotic cells. |
| What is the function of the cell wall? | It provides protection and support to plant cells. |
| What is the function of lysosomes? | They clean the cell (recycle) |
| What is cellular respiration? | Cells make energy by using glucose and oxygen and producing water and energy. |
| What is equilibrium? | When there is an equal number of particles on both sides of a membrane. (The particles still move back and forth) |
| Whta is diffusion? | The movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. |
| What is a virus? | Tiny non-living particles that can only reporduce when they enter a host cell. There is no nucleus or organelles. |

| What are the 3 parts of cell theory? | 1) the cell is the basic unit of life 2) all organisms are composed of one or moe cells 3) all cells "come from" all living things |
| What happens to a plant if chloroplasts stop working? | It can't make food and it will die |
| What is a selectively permeable membrane? | A barrier that allows some materials to pass through but keeps others out. (eg a coffee filter or a cell membrane) |
| What is an organelle? | All the parts inside a cell that carry out functions for survival. |
| What is photosynthesis? | A chemical reaction in plants. It happens in the chloroplast where energy from the sun combines with water and carbon dioxide to produce sugar and oxygen. |
