| alliteration | when words in a phrase start with the same letter or sound |
| assonance | repetition of the vowel sounds in neighboring words |
| onomatopoeia | a word that sounds like the noise or action it is describing |
| oxymoron | a description using two opposite ideas to create an effective description |
| symbolism | combining a lot of ideas presented in metaphor and imagery |
| euphemism | substituting a mild or indirect expression for one that might be considered harsh or blunt |
| irony | Describing something by using opposite language |
| pun | a literary device that plays with the sounds and meanings of each words to produce new, often humorous ideas |
| foreshadowing | giving hint of what is to come later in the story |
| allusion | indirect reference to a person, event or thing or to a part of another text |
