Literary Elements

QuestionAnswer
Central idea / theme The message or life lesson the author is trying to get across
Characterization The total picture of a character in literature. The author's use of details to create a character's personality. The author describes how a character acts, thinks, speaks and looks.
Conflict A struggle between opposing forces
Foreshadowing A narrative device that hints at coming events; often builds suspense or anxiety in the reader
Imagery Description that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste)
Metaphor An implied comparison between two unlike things
Mood Feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader; sensory / emotional quality of work as set by the author
Point of view The perspective from which a story is told
Setting The time and place of a story
Symbolism A person, place or object used to represent something else
Tone The author's attitude toward the subject of the story. The author reveals tone through word choice. Examples: comic, serious
Allusion A reference to another work of literature, person, or event
Hyperbole Extreme exaggeration
Plot The sequence of events in a literary work
