Literary Elements

| Central idea / theme | The message or life lesson the author is trying to get across |
| Characterization | The total picture of a character in literature. The author's use of details to create a character's personality. The author describes how a character acts, thinks, speaks and looks. |
| Conflict | A struggle between opposing forces |
| Foreshadowing | A narrative device that hints at coming events; often builds suspense or anxiety in the reader |
| Imagery | Description that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) |
| Metaphor | An implied comparison between two unlike things |
| Mood | Feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader; sensory / emotional quality of work as set by the author |
| Point of view | The perspective from which a story is told |
| Setting | The time and place of a story |
| Symbolism | A person, place or object used to represent something else |
| Tone | The author's attitude toward the subject of the story. The author reveals tone through word choice. Examples: comic, serious |
| Allusion | A reference to another work of literature, person, or event |
| Hyperbole | Extreme exaggeration |
| Plot | The sequence of events in a literary work |
