1521 Spain conquers (takes over) the Aztecs and starts the Spanish Empire in Mexico. They ruled over and treated native people (“Indians”) unfairly.
1846 The Mexican-American War begins because the US tries to take over Texas
1848 Mexico loses Mexican-American War and gives the US Texas, California, New Mexico, and Arizona. For the next 50 years, Mexico is ruled by dictators.
1910 Mexican Revolution begins: Campesinos (poor farm workers) are promised rights if they win. They do win and the last dictator is forced out.
1860 California is rural, mostly farms, number of people living in California (population) is between 350, 000 and 400, 000
1890 Mass irrigation (watering) & farming of the Central Valley and San Joaquin Valley begins.
1920 Population explosion, California reached 3.5 million or 10x the number of people in 1860
juxaposition placing two (or more) images or ideas close together to emphasize the contrast (differences) between them
personification Giving human traits to nonhuman things (Ex. The trees are dancing in the wind.)
motif An idea, symbol, image, or device that appears multiple times throughout a text.

foreshadowing A hint/clue that suggests what events might happen in the future in a story
