Operations with Whole & Decimal Numbers

TermDefinition
divisible A whole number that can divide evenly into another number WITHOUT a remainder.
product The answer to a multiplication problem.
remainder The left over amount when a number cannot be divided equally.
dividend The number that is to be divided in a division problem.
sum The total when numbers are added.
difference The answer to a subtraction problem.
quotient The answer to a division problem.
divisor The number you are dividing by.
factor the numbers that you multiply to get a product - factors are fewer than the number Factors of 6: 1, 2, 3, 6
even number divisible by 2 (numbers that end in 0,2,4,6, or 8
odd number numbers that end in 1,3,5,7, or 9
prime number A whole number that has exactly two factors, 1 and itself.
mental computation finding answers to math problems without aids; doing math "in your head"
algorithm a step-by-step procedure for solving a problem
array An arrangement of objects in equal rows.
area model a rectangular grid formed from square units
partition divide into parts
Associative Property Changing the grouping of numbers will NOT change the value when adding or multiplying. For example: (7 + 4) + 8 = 7 + (4 + 8)
Distributive Property a(b + c) = ab + ac
Commutative Property The order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product.
Identity Property a) the sum of a number and 0 is the number b) the product of a number and 1 is the number
Zero Property the product of any number and 0 is 0
