| osteo | a prefix that means bone |
| long bones | bones that are longer than they are wide and have a shaft and two ends |
| short bones | bones that have roughly equal dimensions in length, width, and thickness, giving them a cube-like shape |
| flat bones | bones that are flat and not rounded in cross section |
| Irregular Bones | bones that have a complex shape and don't fit into the categories of long, short, or flat bones |
| Diaphysis | the long, tubelike shaft of long bones |
| Epiphysis | expanded end of the long bones in animals |
| Epiphyseal Line | a line on a bone that marks the site of an epiphyseal plate that has stopped growing and become ossified |
| Metaphysis | the part of a long bone that's located between the diaphysis and the epiphysis |
| Medullary Cavity | a hollow space in the middle of long bones that contains bone marrow and serves as a pathway for blood vessels |
| Yellow Bone Marrow | a soft, fatty tissue that's found in the cavities of long bones, and is made up of fat cells and stem cells |
| Periosteum | a fibrous sheath that covers bones |
| Articular Cartilage | a white, living tissue that covers the ends of bones where they meet to form joints |
| Trabeculae | the thin columns and plates of bone that create a spongy structure in a cancellous bone |
| Red Bone Marrow | a soft, spongy tissue found in the center of most bones that produces blood cells |
| Osteon | a cylindrical unit of bone that's the functional and structural unit of dense bone |
| Haversian Canal | microscopic tubes or tunnels in cortical bone that house nerve fibers and a few capillaries |
| Osteoblast | the cells that form new bones and grow and heal existing bones |
| Osteoclast | the cells that degrade bone to initiate normal bone remodeling and mediate bone loss in pathologic conditions by increasing their resorptive activity |
| Canaliculi | a minute canal in a bodily structure |
| Lamellae | a thin flat scale, membrane, or layer |
| Endosteum | a thin layer of vascular connective tissue that lines the inner surface of bones, including the medullary cavity |
| Lacuna | a small cavity or space in bone that houses an osteocyte, a bone cell |
| Arterioles | a very small blood vessel that branches off from your artery and carries blood away from your heart to your tissues and organs |
| Venules | the smallest veins and receive blood from capillaries |
