| cash dividend | a cash distribution to of earnings by a corporation to its shareholders |
| common stock | an account representing the rights of investors in a corporation |
| cumulative preferred stock | Stock that has a right to receive regular dividends that were not declared (paid) in prior years. |
| discount | excess of the face amount of bonds over their issue price or the excess of the par value of stock over its issue price |
| earnings per common share | Net income per share of common stock outstanding during a period, =DIVIDE(net income - preferred dividends) /average number of common shares outstanding |
| in arrears | cumulative preferred stock dividends that have not been paid in prior years |
| outstanding stock | Issued stock that has not been reacquired but remains in the hands of stockholders |
| par value | A dollar amount assigned to each share of stock |
| preferred stock | A class of stock issued by a corporation that bears preference rights |
| premium | excess of the issue price of bonds over their face amount |
| prior period adjustment | Corrections of material errors related to a prior period or periods |
| restrictions | Amounts of retained earnings that have been limited for use as dividends |
| retained earnings statement | A summary of the changes in the retained earnings in a corporation that have occurred during a specific period of time |
| statement of stockholders' equity | summary of the changes in stockholder's equity in a corporation during a specific period of time |
| stock | Shares of ownership of a corporation |
| stock dividend | A distribution of additional shares of stock by a corporation to its stockholders |
| stock split | A process by which a corporation reduces the par or stated value of its common stock by issuing a proportionate number of additional shares. |
| stockholders | owners of a corporation |
| treasury stock | stock that a corporation has issued and reacquired |
