Elements of Poetry

| Rhyme Scheme | The rhyming pattern in a poem |
| Stanza | A paragraph in a poem |
| Line | Not always a complete sentence |
| Meter | A pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables that make a rhythm in poetry |
| Foot | The basic unit of a poetic meter |
| Troche | A foot with a stressed and unstressed syllable |
| Lyrical Poems | Expressed the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker. The speaker and poet are always the same person. |
| Narrative Poems | Tells a story in the form a poem. Narrative poems have elements like those in a story ( setting, plot, characters) |
| Epic Poems | Long narrative poems that tell an exiting or inspiring story, usually about a hero. |
| Free Verse Poems | Known for its lack of structure. It has no fixed line length., no rhyme scheme, no specific stanza pattern |
| Limerick Poems | Humorous 5 line poem with a specific rhyme scheme. (AABBA) |
| Tone | The author's attitude about the topic of the text. How the authors comes across in a text. |
| Mood | The feeling a reader gets while reading a text. |
| Symbolism | When the author uses something to represent or stand for something else. |
| Images | Descriptive language (word)used to appeal to one or more of the five senses. |
| Extended Metaphor | A direct comparation between two unlike things NOT using like or as that is extended or used throughout a text (story, poem, songs. |
| Irony | VERBAL: sarcasm DRAMATIC: the audience or reader knows more than the character SITUASINAL: what happens contradicts what is expected |
| Repetition | A literary device that repeats the same words or phrases a few times to make an idea clearer. |
| Alliteration | The repetition of constant sounds at the beginning of words in a string of words. |
| Assonance | The repetition of vowel sounds in a string of words. |
