| Term | Definition |

| Logical fallacies | are potential vulnerabilities or weaknesses in an argument. They often arise from a failure to make a logical connection between the claim and the evidence used to support it |
| Red Herring | occurs when a speaker skips to a new and irrelevant topic in order to avoid the topic of discussion |
| Ad hominem fallacy | the phrase refers to the diversionary tactic of switching the argument from the issue at hand to the character of the other speaker |
| Straw man fallacy | occurs when a speaker chooses a deliberately poor or oversimplified example in order to ridicule and refute an opponents |
| Either or Fallacy | the speaker presents twp extreme options as the only possible choices |
| Post hoc ergo propter hoc | highlights that it is incorrect to claim that something is a cause just because it happened earlier |
| Faulty Analogy | focuses on irrelevant or inconsequential similarities between two things |
| Hasty generalization | not enough evidence to support a given conclusion. Uses instances of phenomenon as the basis for much broader conclusions. |
| Closed thesis | statement of the main idea of the argument that also previews the major points the writer intends to make |
| Open thesis | does not list all the points the writer intends to cover in the essay |
| Counterargument Thesis | summary of a counterargument, usually qualified by although or but, precedes the writer’s opinion |
| Qualified argument | acknowledges the limitations of their claims and positions |
