Figurative Language

Vocabulary

alliteration the repetition of words with the same beginning sound
rhyme two or more words that have the same ending sound

personification a figure of speech in which objects are given human qualities
metaphor a figure of speech comparing two things by stating that one thing is another
simile a figure of speech comparing two things using like or as
repetition using the same word or phrase over and over again
hyperbole to make something seem larger or more important than it really is; an exaggeration
imagery language that suggests how someone or something looks, sounds, feels, smells, or tastes; help create a mental picture in your mind
onomatopoeia words that sound like the objects or actions they refer to
