| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Intrinsic | Properties that are not dependent upon how much material is present. |
| Extrinsic | Extrinsic properties are differentiated as being dependent on how much material is present |
| Matter | Anything that takes up space and can be weighed |
| Pure Substance | An element or compound made up of one type of particle |
| Element | Substance made up of only one type of atom with the same number of protons |
| Compound | A substance made up of two or more chemical elements |
| Mixture | A compound made up of two or more chemical components that are not chemically linked |
| Homogenous Mixture | A gaseous, liquid or solid mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample. |
| Heterogenous Mixture | a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture |
| Boiling Point | The temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure of the liquid's environment. |
| Freezing Point | The exact temperature a liquid becomes a solid |
| Evaporation | Process by which an element or compound transitions from its liquid state to its gaseous state below the temperature at which it boils |
| Solution | A homogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent. |
| Solute | A substance that can be dissolved into a solution by a solvent. |
| Solvent | A substance with the ability to dissolve other substances to form a solution. |
| States of Matter | One of the ways in which matter can interact with itself to form a homogeneous phase. |
| Solid | Characterized by structural rigidity and resistance to a force applied to the surface |
| Liquid | A type of matter with specific properties that make it less rigid than a solid but more rigid than a gas. |
| Gas | A substance that is in a gaseous, or vaporous, state of matter |
| Density | The relationship between the mass of the substance and how much space it takes up |
| Mass | A measure of the amount of matter that an object contains |
| Volume | A physical quantity that measures the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by matter |
| Atoms | The smallest part of a substance that cannot be broken down chemically |
| Molecules | Two or more atoms connected by chemical bonds, which form the smallest unit of a substance that retains the composition and properties of that substance. |
| Extraction | A separation process consisting of the separation of a substance from a matrix |
| Filtration | The process in which solid particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed by the use of a filter medium that permits the fluid to pass through but retains the solid particles |
| Physical Property | A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance |
| Chemical Property | A specific characteristic of a substance like an element or a compound, relating to how it can change as a result of a reaction |
| Physical Change | Those in which the shape, size, or state of the matter changes, but the substance is still essentially the same. |
| Chemical Change | The atoms in the reactants rearrange themselves and bond together differently to form one or more new products with different characteristics than the reactants |
| Conductivity | A measure of a solution's ability to conduct electricity |
| Solubility | he ability of a solid, liquid, or gaseous chemical substance to dissolve in solvent and form a solution |
