| onomatopoeia | the use of words that imitate sounds |
| memoir | an author recalls important events from a particular time in his or her life |
| citing evidence | adding a quote to prove a point |
| tone | narrator's feelings about a story or topic based on actions or words |
| alliteration | same beginning sounds that are in words that are next to each other |
| mood | the feeling a reader gets from a story based on events, setting, character, etc. |
| narrator | the person telling the story |
| context clues | clues within a text that helps us figure out the meaning of a word |
| free verse | open form of poetry, without rhyme or rhythm |
| genre | similar categories in literature or music |
| foreshadowing | hints about the plot that will occur at a later time |
| theme | a message or lesson from the story that is conveyed through characters, setting, and actions |
| central idea | the main idea of what the text is mostly about |
| conflict | problem that a character faces |
| dialogue | conversation between characters |
| point of view | a particular way of looking at something |
| plot | a sequence of events in which each event results from a previous event and causes the next in fictional literature (includes an exposition, central conflict, resolution) |
| imagery | vivid word pictures writers use to appeal to one or more of the five senses |
| setting | details of a place and time that the story takes place |
| stanza | a paragraph or section of a poem |
| prose | ordinary written language that does not have a repeating rhythm |
