Chemistry 1:Vocab

Vocabulary Unit 4- "The Boy and the Bottle" (Matter Case Study)

TermDefinition
Matter physical substance in general
Element a substance that can't be broken down by non-nuclear reactions
Mixture a combination of two or more substances in any proportions.
Heterogenous Mixture a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture
Freezing Point point at which something freezes
Solution a homogenous mixture of two or more substances in relative amounts that can be varied
Solvent The solute is the substance that is being dissolved, while the solvent is the dissolving medium
Solid something hard and takes form of something visible has volume and weight
Gas like air kind of
Mass Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object
Atoms An atom is the basic building block of chemistry.
Extraction "Extraction" refers to transference of compound(s) from a solid or liquid into a different solvent or phase.
Physical Property A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance.
Physical Change Physical changes are limited to changes that result in a difference in display without changing the composition.
Conductivity a measure of a solution's ability to conduct electricity.
Extrinsic Property s not essential or inherent to the subject that is being characterized.
Intrinsic Property those that do not depend on the amount of substance present
Pure Substance substances that are made up of only one kind of particle and have a fixed or constant structure.
Compound any substance composed of identical molecules consisting of atoms of two or more chemical elements.
Homogenous Mixture a gaseous, liquid or solid mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample
Boiling Point point at which something boils
Evaportion process by which an element or compound transitions from its liquid state to its gaseous state below the temperature at which it boils
Solute A substance that is dissolved in a solution
States of Matter defined as one of the ways in which matter can interact with itself to form a homogeneous phase.
Liquid The particles in a liquid are free to flow. So, it has a definite volume, but not a definite shape.
Density the relationship between the mass of the substance and how much space it takes up
Volume a physical quantity that measures the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by matter
Molecules group of two or more atoms that form the smallest identifiable unit into which a pure substance can be divided
Filtration solid particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed by the use of a filter medium that permits the fluid to pass through
Chemical Property a property or characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition or identity of the substance is changed.
Chemical Change one chemical substance is transformed into one or more different substances, such as when iron becomes rust.
Solubility the ability to be dissolved, especially in water.
