Parts of the Microscope
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Slide | Glass or plastic rectangle you place the specimen on to be viewed |
| Cover Slip | Very thin glass or plastic square you place over the specimen being viewed |
| Eyepiece | Part of the microscope you look into; 10X |
| Objective Lenses | Additional lens for magnification |
| Scanning power objective | Shortest, 4X |
| Low power objective | Medium, 10X |
| High power objective | Largest, 40X |
| Arm | Solid piece, like the backbone of the microscope that you can hold when moving the microscope |
| Base | Solid piece at the bottom of the microscope that you can hold when moving the microscope |
| Body Tube | Connects eyepiece to the objective lenses |
| Stage | Flat platform where you place the slide or specimen |
| Stage clips | Hold the specimen or slide in place |
| Diaphragm | Wheel on the underside of the stage. Adjusts the amount of light passing through |
| Light Source | Mirror or bulb that shines light on the specimen |
| Coarse Focus Knob | Larger knob that is used first to bring the specimen into view . DO NOT USE ON HIGH POWER |
| Fine Focus Knob | Smaller knob that is used to sharpen the focus. Can be used with ALL objectives |
