Acids and Bases
8th Grade Unit 4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| pH Scale | a measurement of how acidic or basic a substance is, with a range of 0 to 14 |
| Reactive | a substance has a tendency to readily undergo chemical reactions with other substances, often accompanied by a release of energy |
| Corrode | the gradual deterioration of a material, usually a metal, due to a chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment |
| Sour | The taste of acidic materials |
| Bitter | The taste of basic materials |
| Base | a substance that can accept hydrogen ions (protons) when dissolved in water, typically having a bitter taste, slippery feel, and a pH level greater than 7, meaning it can neutralize an acid by reacting with its hydrogen ions |
| Indicator | a substance that visibly changes color when added to a solution |
| Litmus Paper | strip of paper that is chemically treated with a dye. Helps to determine if a chemical is acidic or basic. |
| Acid | a substance that releases hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water, giving the solution a sour taste and the ability to react with bases to form salts |
