Chapter 1 math vocabulary for pre algebra

| Algebra | A branch of Mathematics dealing with symbols |
| Algebraic Expression | An expression that contains sums and/or products of variables and numbers |
| Coordinate Plane | Another name for coordinate system |
| Coordinate System | A coordinate system is formed by the intersections of 2 number lines that meet at right angles at their 0 points, also called a coordinate plane |
| Counterexample | An example that shows a conjecture that is not true |
| Deductive Reasoning | The process of using facts, properties or rules to justify conclusions or reach a valid conclusion |
| Defining a Variable | Choosing a variable and a quantity for the variable to represent it in an equation |
| Domain | The domain of a relation is the set of all x coordinates from each pair |
| Equation | A mathematical sentence that contains an equal sign |
| Evaluate | Find the numerical value of an expression |
| Four Step Plan | A plan for problem solving consisting of the steps understand, plan ,solve ,and check |
| Graph | A dot at the point that corresponds to an ordered pair on a coordinate plane |
| Guess, check, and Revise | A problem solving strategy in which you make a reasonable guess and check it in the problem and use the results to improve your guess till you get the solution |
| Look for a Pattern | A problem solving strategy in which you analyze the first terms in a pattern and identify a rule that is used to go from one number to the next |
| Make a Table | A problem solving strategy in which you use a table to organize information in an understandable way |
| Numerical Expression | A combination of numbers and operation such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division |
| Order of Operations | PEMDAS |
| Ordered Pair | A pair of numbers used to locate any number on a coordinate plane |
| Origin | The Point at which the number lines intersect in a coordinate plane |
| Properties | Statements that are true for any number |
| Range | The range of a relation is the set of all the y - coordinates from each pair |
| Relation | A set of ordered pairs |
| Simplify | To write an expression in a simpler form |
| Variable | A place holder for any value |
| Work Backword | A problem solving strategy in which you start with the end result and undo each step that led up to the end result |
| x - axis | The horizontal number line in the coordinate plane |
| x - coordinate | The second number of an ordered pair |
| y - axis | The vertical number line in the coordinate plane |
| y - coordinate | The first number in an ordered pair |
