Quiz - Chemical Chan

QuestionAnswer
What is a chemcial change? when one or more substances chemically combine and turn into a new substance with totally different physical properties.
What are physical properties? characteristics or traits that can be seen, felt, heard, tasted, smelled or measured from the outside.
Examples of physical properties: *color *volume *size/shape *melting point *luster (shiny or dull) *magnetism *texture (fluffy&rough etc) *density
Evidences can also mean....? proof or signs of
Evidences (proof or signs of) a chemical change are.... *Production of a gas *Production of a precipitate *UNEXPECTED change of temperature (thermal energy) *UNEXPECTED color change
What happens when a gas is produced? There might be the following observed: *smell/odor ...usually bad but could be good like in baking cakes *sound *bubbles
How is a precipitate formed? when 2 liquids chemical bond to form a solid
What is a change in thermal energy? When the temperature increases (goes up) or decreases (goes down) UNEXPECTEDLY Ex: You do not expect your body temperature to be 106. (if it is your sick ...chem. change in body)
Example of UNEXPECTED color change *sugar turning brown when heated in a pan *a banana turning from yellow to brown/black *bread turning green
Painting the wall or adding food coloring to water is NOT an example of UNEXPECTED color change
Examples of Everyday Chemical Changes *rotting (decomposition) *baking *combustion (burning/heat) *cleaning (ex. teeth whitening - *rust silver polish) *digestion (eating food) *photosynthesis
Is roasting a marshmellow a chemcial change? yes, the evidience is that the color changes and a new substance of "ash" forms on the outside.
Is cutting paper a chemical change? No, this only changes the outside apprearance...a new substance is not formed.
An example of an UNEXPECTED decrease (goes down) in temperature... when baking soda and vinegar are chemically combined
When copper reacts to oxygen it turns green and when silver reacts to oxygen it turns black....these are BOTH chemical changes because a color changehappens BUT they are different because the NEW green substance on the copper is different from the NEW black substance on the silver
This is just a NOTE: on the short answer pay more attention to the 2 tables and for any changes in temperature, or state of matter than the picture
