| flashback | when a writer interrupts the main action of a story to recreate a situation or incident of an earlier time |
| foreshadowing | the dropping of important hints by the author to prepare the reader for what is coming and to help the reader anticipate the outcome |
| characterization | the means through which an author reveals a character's personality |
| theme | a general truth or lesson developed in a story |
| tone | the author's attitude about the subject |
| conflict | the struggle between opposing forces |
| mood | the feeling the reader gets from a story |
| style | the manner in which the writer uses language |
| symbol | an object/item that stands for, or represents, something else |
| allusion | a reference to some person, place, event with literary, historical, or geopolitical significance |
| pathos | the quality in prose that evokes feelings of sorrow, pity, compassion in the reader; makes the story more compelling; connects with the ability to emphasize with the situations of the text |
