Simile A comparison of two things using “like” or “as”
Metaphor A comparison of two things NOT using “like” or “as”
Imagery The use of descriptive words to evoke the reader's 5 senses and to create a picture in the reader’s mind.
Irony occurs when the reader’s expectations are different than what actually happens in the story.
Symbolism A thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract.
Foreshadowing Clues an author includes to suggest events that will happen further into the story.
Personification Giving human-like qualities to nonhuman or non-living things.
Hyperbole An exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally.
Onomatopoeia Words containing sounds similar to the noises they describe.
Allusion When a literary work (novel, poem, short story) references another work of literature, religion, mythology, pop culture, or historical event.
Motif A recurring idea, symbol or image that appears repeatedly in a text that’s meant to reinforce a large theme or idea.
Allegory a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically involving morality or political meanings.
Understatement Intentionally downplaying the significance of something in order to emphasize it further.
Juxtaposition Placing two objects, ideas, or images alongside each other (physically or in the imagination) in order to highlight their differences.
