Unit 1 Review: Speed, velocity, acceleration, force
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| motion | A change in position over time |
| speed | The measure of how far something moves in a given amount of time |
| position | The location of an object |
| vector | A quantity that has both size and direction |
| reference point | A location to which you compare other locations. |
| velocity | Speed in a specific direction |
| acceleration | The rate of change in velocity |
| centripetal acceleration | Acceleration in a circular motion |
| force | A push or pull. Can cause an object to change speed and direction. |
| net force | The combination of all forces acting on an object. |
| inertia | The tendency of all objects to resist a change in motion |
| Newton's 1st law of Motion | An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion at the same speed and direction, unless it experiences an unbalanced force. |
| Newton's 2nd Law of Motion | The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied. |
| Newton's 3rd Law of Motion | Whenever one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts and equal and opposite force on the first. |
| Speed Formula | Speed = Distance (÷) Time |
| Acceleration Formula | Acceleration = (Velocity 2-Velocity 1) (÷) Time |
| Force Formula | Force = Mass (x) Acceleration |
