Unit 1 Review: Speed, velocity, acceleration, force

TermDefinition
motion A change in position over time
speed The measure of how far something moves in a given amount of time
position The location of an object
vector A quantity that has both size and direction
reference point A location to which you compare other locations.
velocity Speed in a specific direction
acceleration The rate of change in velocity
centripetal acceleration Acceleration in a circular motion
force A push or pull. Can cause an object to change speed and direction.
net force The combination of all forces acting on an object.
inertia The tendency of all objects to resist a change in motion
Newton's 1st law of Motion An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion at the same speed and direction, unless it experiences an unbalanced force.
Newton's 2nd Law of Motion The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied.
Newton's 3rd Law of Motion Whenever one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts and equal and opposite force on the first.
Speed Formula Speed = Distance (÷) Time
Acceleration Formula Acceleration = (Velocity 2-Velocity 1) (÷) Time
Force Formula Force = Mass (x) Acceleration
