TermDefinition
Atom the smallest unit of matter that retains the properties of a chemical element
Element a pure substance made up of only one type of atom, meaning all its atoms have the same number of protons, and it cannot be broken down into simpler substances through chemical reactions
Molecule a group of two or more atoms that are chemically bonded together, forming the smallest unit of a substance with its unique properties
Physical Change a change in the form or appearance of a substance, like its shape, size, or state, without altering its chemical composition; essentially, the substance remains the same, just in a different form
Solution a homogeneous mixture where one substance (called the solute) is evenly dissolved in another substance (called the solvent), creating a single, uniform phase
Solute the substance that gets dissolved in a solvent to create a solution
Solvent a substance that can dissolve other substances to form a solution
Chemical Change one or more substances are transformed into entirely new substances with different properties
Exothermic Reaction chemical reaction that releases energy, usually in the form of heat, to its surroundings, making the surrounding temperature increase
Endothermic Reaction a chemical reaction that absorbs heat energy from its surroundings, meaning it takes in heat to proceed, causing a cooling effect in the immediate environment
Precipitate a solid substance that forms and separates from a solution as a result of a chemical reaction
