Properties of Water
8th Grade Unit 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cohesion | he property of molecules of the same kind sticking together or being mutually attracted |
| Adhesion | the attraction or tendency of two different substances or surfaces to stick to each other |
| Surface Tension | he property of a liquid's surface that acts like a thin elastic film, caused by the strong attraction between liquid molecules at the surface, which pulls them inwards and minimizes the surface area, allowing objects denser than the liquid to float on it |
| Capillary Action | he ability of a liquid to move through a narrow space, like a thin tube or porous material, against gravity, due to the attractive forces between the liquid molecules and the surface of the container, essentially "pulling" the liquid upwards |
| Meniscus | a curve in the surface of a molecular substance (water, of course) when it touches another material |
| Condense | the process of a substance changing from a gas to a liquid |
