| algebraic expression | an expression that contains sums and/or products of vocabulary and numbers |
| coordinate plane | another name for the coordinate systems |
| coordinate system | a coordinate system is formed by the intersection of two number lines that meet at right angles at their zero points; also called a coordinate plane |
| counterexample | an example that shows a conjecture is not true |
| deductive reasoning | the process of using facts, properties, or rules to justify reasoning or reach valid conclusions |
| defining a variable | choosing a variable and a quantity for the variable to represent in an equation |
| domain | the domain of a relation is the set of all x-coordinates from each pair |
| equation | a mathematical sentence that contains an equals sign (=) |
| evaluate | find the numerical value of an expression |
| four-step plan | a plan for problem solving consisting of the steps Understand, Plan, Solve, and Check |
| graph | a dot at the point that corresponds to an ordered pair on a coordinate plane |
| guess, check, and edit | a problem solving strategy in which you make a reasonable guess, check it in the problem, and use the results to improve your guess until you find the solution |
| look for a pattern | a problem solving strategy in which you analyze the first few terms in a pattern and identify a rule that is used to go from one number to the next |
| make a table | a problem solving strategy in which you use a table to organize information in an understandable way |
| numerical expression | a combination of numbers and operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division |
| order of operations | the rules to follow when more than one operation is used in the expression (PEMDAS) |
| ordered pair | a pair of numbers used to locate any point on a coordinate plane |
| origin | the point at which the number lines intersect in a coordinate system |
| properties | statements that are true for any number |
| range | a measure of variation that is the difference between the least and greatest values in a set of data |
| relation | a set of ordered pairs |
| simplify | to write an expression in a simpler form |
| variable | a placeholder for any value |
| work backward | a problem solving strategy in which you start with the end result and undo each step that led to the end result |
| x-axis | the horizontal number line which helps to form the coordinate system |
| x-coordinate | the first number of an ordered pair |
| y-axis | the vertical number line which helps to form the coordinate system |
| y-coordinate | the second number of an ordered pair |
