Superficial | Near the surface |

Anterior | Front |

Ventral | Front of the trunk |
Dorsal | Back of the trunk |
Medial | towards the midline |
Lateral | Away from the midline |
Proximal | Close to the body |
Distal | Away from the body |
Ipsilateral | On the same side |
Contralateral | On opposite sides |
Median | The midline |
Sagittal | The longitudinal plane dividing the head and torso into right/left halves. |
Coronal, Frontal | The longitudinal plane dividing the body into equal or unequal front and back parts. |
Cross, Transverse | The transverse plane dividing the body or body parts into upper and lower segments |
Cranial/Dura Mater | One of the layers of connective tissue that make up the meninges of the brain |
Vertebral/Dura Mater | The tough outer layer of tissue that covers and protects the brain and spinal cord and is closest to the skull |
Thoracic/Pleura | A thin layer of tissue that covers the lungs and lines the interior wall of the chest cavity |
Abdominopelvic/Peritoneum | The tissue that lines the abdominal wall and covers most of the organs in the abdomen |
Respiratory Tract | The organs and structures in your body that allow you to breathe |
Urinary Tract | The organs that make urine and remove it from the body |
Digestive Tract | The organs that food and liquids travel through when they are swallowed, digested, absorbed, and leave the body as feces |
Mucosa | The moist, inner lining of some organs and body cavities |
