metalinguistic awareness the ability to treat language as an object separate from the from the meaning it conveys ex: 5 y/o can distinguish "drink the chair" as silly and "cake the eat" is the wrong way around
auditory discrimination the ability to recognize and distinguish between different sounds ex: a baby is able to recognize the difference between sounds like "pa" and "ba"
negation the contradiction or denial of something ex: young children learn to comment on the disappearances of objects, to refuse a suggestion, or to reject an assertion (as simple as saying "no")
