phonemes the sounds that make up a language ex: /t/ and /d/ are the only difference between the words tip and dip, so they are phonemes
intonation the use of pitch to modify the meaning of a sentence ex: when pitch rises at the end of a sentence it indicates a question
clipping a process of shortening words ex: the slang "teach" for teacher
