MMA Unit 1 Vocab

TermDefinition
Mathematical Model A way to represent data using letters, numbers or pictures so that it can be analyzed or used to predict outcomes.
Survey A study, generally in the form of an interview or questionnaire, that provides researchers with information about how people think and act.
Observational study observes individuals and measures variables of interest but does not attempt to influence the responses
Experimental study A study where one variable is intentionally changed to measure the effect on other variables.
Population A set of data including all the individuals in a certain category
Sample A set of data including only some of the individuals in a certain category, meant to represent the whole.
Quantitative data Data collected that are numbers indicating amounts or sizes.
Categorical (Qualitative) data Data collected that are words or ideas that can be categorized.
Bar Graph A form of graph in which numeric values are represented by horizontal or vertical rectangles.
Circle Graph A data display that uses pieces of a circle to show parts of a whole
Stem and Leaf Plot A system used to condense a set of data where the greatest place value of the data forms the stem and the next greatest place value forms the leaves.
Dot Plot a graphical display of data using dots
Histogram A graph of vertical bars representing the frequency of a set of data in a certain range
Mean the arithmetic average of a set of data, obtained by adding the scores and then dividing by the number of scores
Median the middle score in a set of data; half the scores are above it and half are below it
Mode the most frequently occurring score(s) in a set of data
Quartiles Values that divide a data set into four equal parts
Box and Whisker Plot a diagram that summarizes data using the median, the upper and lower quartiles, and the extreme values
Deviation How far away a set of data varies from the mean (average)
Standard Deviation a computed measure of how much scores vary around the mean score
