The Spanish Alphabet

These are the letters of the Spanish alphabet, their names and their sounds.

Aa Ah Like the A in father. NEVER a like apple or like make.
Bb bay Like the B in boy.
Cc say Like the c in cup or the c in cent. Before a, o, u use the hard C like cup; before e or i, use the soft C like cent.
Dd day Like the D in dog.
Ee ay Like the A in play. NEVER like the E in bed.
Ff effay Like the F in fun.
Gg hay Like the G in go or the H in hay Before a, o, u use the hard G like go; before e or i, use the H like hay.
Hh ahchay Like H in hour. In Spanish H is ALWAYS silent!
Ii ee Like the ee in see NEVER like the I in sit or like time.
Jj hota Like the H in hot
Kk kah Like the K in king In Spanish K is almost never used.
Ll ellay Like the L inlook
LLll doblay ellay Like the Y in yes
Mm emmay Like the M in my
Nn ennay Like the N in no
Ññ enyay Like the ny in canyon or onion The accent mark over the Ñ is called tilde.
Oo oh Like the O in go NEVER like the O in pot.
Pp pay Like the P in pot
Qq koo Like the Q in quiche In Spanish the qu sounds like k, not like the kw in English.
Rr erray Like the R in run. When R is the first letter of a word, it is softly trilled.
RRrr doblay erray No equivalent sound in English! The sound of RR is similar to R, but with a strong trill.
Ss essay Like S in sun The Spanish S never sounds like the English Z.
Tt tay Like T in top
Uu oo (like in zoo) Like oo in pool The U in Spanish never sounds like the uu in English cute.
Vv oovay Like V in van
Ww oovay doblay Like W in wet This is not a very common letter in Spanish.
XX ekeez Like X in text
Yy yah Like Y in yes The Y used as a vowel is not common in Spanish.
Zz saytah Like S in say The Z in Spanish never sounds like the English z like in zoo.
