| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| COMPOUND | a substance consisting of molecules that contain more than one kind of atom |
| CHEMICAL FORMULA | a group of letters and numbers that represents a molecule of a compound |
| CHEMICAL CHANGE | a change that results in the formation of one or more new substances |
| SOLVENT | the part of a solution that dissolves other substances |
| SOLUTE | the part of a solution dissolved by the solvent |
| CONCENTRATION | how much of the solute is dissolved in a given amount of the solvent in a solution |
| RATE OF DISSOLUTION | speed at which a solute dissolves in a solvent |
| ELEMENT | a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances |
| CHEMICAL SYMBOL | letter(s) used to represent each element |
| PERIODIC TABLE | a table that organizes the chemical elements |
| PHYSCIAL CHANGE | a change that alters the form or appearance of matter but does not form any new substances |
| AQUEOUS SOLUTION | a type of homogeneous mixture in which molecules of another substance are uniformly mixed with water |
| DILUTE/DILUTION | the decreasing of the concentration of a solution |
| CITY-GIRLS-LEAVE-THEIR-PHONES-ON | Mnemonic device to help remember the 6 evidences of a CHEMICAL change: C = COLOR change G = GAS formation (not phase change) L = LIGHT produced T = TEMPERATURE change (not phase change) P = PRECIPITATE formation O = ODOR produced |
| AGITATION | a violent stirring or movement |
| MOLECULE | a group of atoms bonded together |
| ATOM | basic unit of matter |
| PRODUCT | substance produced in a chemical reaction |
| PRECIPITATE | a solid that forms from a solution during a chemical reaction |
| REACTANT | a substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction |
| YIELD | to produce |
| SATURATION | the state of a solution that occurs when no more of a solute can be absorbed, combined with, or added |
