Intonation The pitch of your words- When asking questions or communicating with others you might noticed certain words being emphasized or rising, which is intonation
Colloquial Used in familiar conversations- Words such as: Wanna, somewhat - Can describe colloquial
WEEK 2-
Orthography Visual pictures /symbols that translate speech to print
Compound word When two+ words are put together to make one word- Examples: Flash + light= Flashlight
Semantics Study of meaning- Example: Makeup could mean the beauty product or you have a test to "makeup".
WEEK 3-
Simultaneous Bilinguals 2+ languages from birth- "When Caleb started talking he could say hello in English and Spanish"
Sequential Bilinguals first language from birth, learned second language around PK- "Caleb grew up speaking Spanish at home and has sensed started learning English in PK"
Second language acquisition Second language learned after age 7, even into adulthood- "At the age of 8, Caleb started learning English at home"
WEEK 4-
Dyslexia Reading/Learning disorder where the student has a hard time to recognizing speech sounds and decoding- Example: Caleb often times confuses his P with his B
Codeswitching Changing between two or more languages in a conversation "Caleb often starts talking in English during conversation but after awhile I noticed Caleb started speaking Spanish"
Blending Combines parts of two+ words to create one Example: Guess + Estimate = Guestimate
WEEK 5-
Asset-based approaches Teaching method that supports students culture and values rather then not accepting it within the classroom Example- Providing assignments with diversity, allowing for students to talk about their culture and vales, having posters of different cultures.
Syntax How words are formed to make sentences. Example: "she kicked the ball" and "she kicked the ball and scored a goal"
African American English Dialect of English spoken by African Americans Example: Double negatives "Caleb ain't never cleaning"
WEEK 6-
Phonology System and patterns of speech sounds Example- The P in "up" is different then the P in "pop"
Phoneme Smallest unit of sounds Example- /d/ - d- dog, /d/- dd- add
Categorical Perception Considered same sound by listener Example- See & Sea
WEEK 7-
Grapheme Smallest contrastive unit in writing Example- "tch" in "catch"
Pronoun A word that replaces a noun when mentioning person, place, etc. Example- "I" & "You"
Orthography Conventions for writing Example- Spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc.
WEEK 8-
Derivational phonological and orthographic changes to base words/roots when adding morphemes Example- The word computerize is derived from the word "computer"
Inflectional A process of word formation in which a word is modified Example- comparatives: "Big" becomes "Bigger" or "Biggest"
Emergent Stage Early stages of reading/writing development in children Example- Children look at pictures to interpret the story rather then text
WEEK 9-
Conjunction Words that connect words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence Example- And, Or, So, Because
Letter name knowledge Ability to recognize and name letters in the alphabet Example- You ask a student to point to the letter B and they correctly do so. Or you ask the student to point to a letter and name the letter and they correctly do so.
Sight word A word that a reader can recognize instantly without sounding it out Example- The, It, And, A
