Place Value - Base Ten

| 1/10 times as much | value DECREASES as the digits move to the RIGHT one place |
| 10 times as much | value INCREASES as the digits move to the LEFT one place |
| base ten | a ten-digit number system that uses place value to record numbers |
| compare | To determine how numbers are alike or different. |
| compose | The amounts that make up a number. Ex: 342 is composed of 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 2 ones. |
| decimal notation | A fractional amount written using the base 10 system with digits and a decimal point. Ex: 3/10 = 0.3 |
| decimal number | A number that uses a decimal point followed by digits as a way of showing values less than one. |
| decompose | To take numbers apart (break down) in a problem to make it easier to solve. Ex: 342 can be decomposed to 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 2 ones. |
| digit | Single whole numbers (0 to 9) used to write all numbers. |
| equal to | having the same value |
| expanded form | A way to write numbers that shows the place value of each digit. |
| finite decimal | A decimal number with digits that do NOT go on forever. The decimal number stops, or terminates. |
| greater than | The symbol > is used to show when one number is greater than another. |
| hundredths place | Second digit to the right of the decimal place; this shows the number of 1/100 that you have. |
| less than | The symbol < is used to show when one number is less than another. |
| place value | The value of where a digit is in the number. |
| powers of ten | Numbers that are formed by multiplying ten by itself a certain number of times. Ex: Ten to the third power = 1,000. |
| quantity | how much there is of something |
| Rounding | A method used to shorten numbers. Rounding involves either increasing or decreasing a number to the next digit. |
| standard form | a number written in a way that shows only its digits |
| tenths place | First place to the right of the decimal place; this shows the number of 1/10 that you have. |
| thousandths place | Third digit to the right of the decimal place; this shows the number of 1/1,000 that you have. |
| whole numbers | Natural numbers ( counting numbers) and zero; 0, 1, 2, 3... There is no fractional or decimal part and no negatives! |
| word form | A way to write numbers using words. |
