| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| atomic mass | the mass of an atom, number of protons +neutrons |
| atomic number | number of protons in the nucleus of an atom |
| Bohr model | is a system consisting of a small, dense nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons—similar to the structure of the Solar System, but with attraction provided by electrostatic forces in place of gravity |
| electron cloud | electron cloud is the region of negative charge surrounding an atomic nucleus that is associated with an atomic orbital. |
| atoms | smallest particle of an element, made of protons, neutrons and electrons |
| electrons | negatively charged subatomic particle that orbits the nucleus of an atom |
| neutrons | a subatomic particle of the nucleus of an atom without a charge that contributes to the atom’s mass-neutral |
| Nuclear Atomic Model–Rutherford model | nuclear model of the atom consists of a small and dense positively charged interior surrounded by a cloud of electrons. |
| Neucleus | positively charged central core of an atom, consisting of protons and neutrons and containing nearly all its mass. |
| neucles | positively-charged center of an atom that usually contains protons and neutrons. |
| Planetary Atomic model | According to the Bohr model, often referred to as a planetary model, the electrons encircle the nucleus of the atom in specific allowable paths called orbits |
| Plum Pudding Model | Thomson's plum pudding model of the atom had negatively-charged electrons embedded within a positively-charged "soup.” |
| Protons | positively charged subatomic particles of the nucleus of an atom that contribute to the mass of an atom. |
| Solid Sphere Atomic Model | proposed by John Dalton in 1803. It states that all objects are made of particles called atoms and that they are solid spheres that cannot be divided further into smaller particles. |
| Structure | the arrangement of and relations between the parts or element |
| sphere | a round solid figure |
| Valence election | electrons that located in the outermost electron shell of an atom |
