| Mass | a measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| Molecule | the smallest particle of a substance that retains all the properties |
| Atoms | the smallest particle of an element that can exist either alone or in combination |
| Pure Substance | a substance that is made up of only one type of atom or molecule, and has a fixed structure |
| Elements | a simple substance that cannot be broken down into smaller parts or changed into another substance |
| Chemical Symbols | a one or two-letter abbreviation used to represent a chemical element. |
| Periodic Table | a tabular array of the chemical elements organized by atomic number |
| Compounds | substance made up of two or more different elements that are chemically joined together in a fixed ratio |
| Chemical Formula | tells us the number of atoms of each element in a compound. It contains the symbols of the atoms of the elements present in the compound as well as how many there are for each element in the form of subscripts. |
| Models | a representation of a system, process, event, or idea that is used to explain and describe phenomena that are too complex, large, or small to observe directly. |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | a substance that is not uniform in composition and does not blend smoothly, and its constituents do not mix uniformly |
| Solute | a substance that is dissolved into another substance |
| Composition | the arrangement, ratio, and type of atoms in molecules of chemical substances |
| Solvent | a substance, ordinarily a liquid, in which other materials dissolve to form a solution. |
| Homogeneous Mixture | a mixture of substances that are blended so well that the individual substances are not visible and the mixture has the same properties and composition throughout |
