Matter anything that has mass and takes up space, or has volume
Solid a state of matter that has a fixed shape, volume, and mass
Liquid a state of matter that has a definite volume but no fixed shape, and takes the shape of its container
Gas a substance that has no fixed shape or volume
Fluid substance that does not possess a definite shape and easily yields to external pressure
Elements a substance that is made up of only one type of atom, and cannot be broken down into a simpler substance
Chemical Symbol a one- or two-letter abbreviation used to represent a chemical element
Periodic Table the organized array of all the chemical elements in order of increasing atomic number
Atomic Number the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place in the periodic table.
Atomic Mass the mass of an atom, which is the sum of the masses of its protons, neutrons, and electrons
Compounds a pure substance that's made up of two or more different elements that are chemically joined together.
Chemical Reaction a process that transforms one or more substances, called reactants, into different substances, called products
Chemical Formula tells us the number of atoms of each element in a compound.
Molecules a group of two or more atoms that can be divided into a pure substance while still retaining the substance's chemical properties and composition
