Math Unit 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
To write a number with numerals so it is easy to read. EX: 5,382 Standard Form
To write or say a number using letters and words. Word Form
The symbols we use for numbers. Digit
Three places separated by a comma. Period
The value of a digit based on its location in a number. Place Value
The position of a digit in a number. EX. In 345 the 3 is in the hundreds place Place
To look at the differences in numbers values. Compare
Shows that the first number is larger than the second number. Greater Than
Shows that the first number is smaller than the second number. EX: 305 <356 Less Than
To make an approximate calculation or give a number close to the original. EX: 4,789 ~5,000 Estimate
To change a number to an easier value by finding the nearest place value. Round
To rearrange numbers into groups based on place value. Regroup
A number used in an addition sentence Addends
A way of performing a problem by following specific steps. Algorithm
To separate a number to show the value of each digit. Expanded Form
The answer in an addition problem that tells the total. EX.638 + 120 = 758* Sum
The answer in a subtraction problem. EX: 451-123 = 328* Difference
EX 5,000 +300 +80 +2 =5,382 Expanded Form
EX: 345 > 305 Greater Than
Ex. 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 Digit
EX. Five thousand, three hundred, eighty-two Word Form
In the problem: 732 + 164 =896, 732 and 164 are what? Addends
