Exploration and Colonization
| Term | Definition |

| Charter | a contract given to someone to establish a colony |
| Colonization | state-sponsored settlement of people to new territories |
| Exploration | traveling to new territories for the purpose of discovery |
| Mercantilism | economic policy where colonies serve as a source of raw materials to increase the wealth and maintain a favorable balance of trade for the “mother” country |
| Quakers | a religious group that created a colony in Pennsylvania. They did not like violence and treated all people like friends |
| Region | a geographic area that share similar characteristics |
| Representative Government | a government where people are elected to speak for the best interests of the voters and carry out their wishes |
| Virginia House of Burgesses | first representative assembly in the colonies |
| Fundamental Orders of Connecticut | first written constitution in the colonies |
| self-government | the belief that people should run their own government and change it if needed |
| Plantation System | Large farms where the slaves were forced to work |
| Appalachian mountains | the mountains in the east---on the western side of the original 13 colonies |
| Mayflower Compact | The 1620 agreement signed by Pilgrims establishing self-government and majority rule at Plymouth. |
| Puritans and Pilgrims | Religious groups from England who fled to North America for religious freedom. |
