Data Displays and Number Systems
Term | Definition |

Data | Information that is gathered by counting, measuring, questioning, or observing. |
Statistics | The study of numerical data: collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to interpret it and answer questions. |
Variability | How spread out the values in a set of data are. |
Statistical Question | A question that would be answered by collecting or analyzing data. |
Range | The difference between the maximum and the minimum in a data set. It is a measure of how spread out a distribution is. |
Dot Plot | A sketch of data in which check marks, X's, or other marks above a labeled line show the frequency of each value. |
Maximum | The largest amount or the greatest number in a set of data. |
Distribution | The arrangement and frequency of data values in a data set. A distribution may be summarized with measures of center and variability. |
Mode | The value or values that occur most often in a data set. |
Data Landmark | A notable feature of a data set. Some landmarks are the mean, median, mode, and range. |
Minimum | The smallest amount or the smallest number in a set of data. |
Average | A typical value for a set of numbers. The word average usually refers to the mean of a set of numbers. |
Mean | A typical value for a set of numerical data, often called the average. The mean if found by dividing the sum of the numbers by the number of numbers in the data set. |
