Data Displays and Number Systems
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Data | Information that is gathered by counting, measuring, questioning, or observing. |
| Statistics | The study of numerical data: collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to interpret it and answer questions. |
| Statistical Question | A question that would be answered by collecting or analyzing data. |
| Range | The difference between the maximum and the minimum in the data set. It is a measure of how spread out a distribution is. |
| Variability | How spread out values in a set of data are. |
| Dot Plot | A number line long enough to encompass all numbers in a sample, showing a dot over the position corresponding to each number. |
| Maximum | Highest or greatest amount or value. |
| Distribution | The distribution of data typically takes into account the range and spread of a data set. |
| Mode | A type of average. |
| Data Landmark | Data is often in graphs or charts for analysis and may include facts, numbers or measurements. |
| Minimum | Lowest or least amount or value. |
| Median | A type of average which is the middle value of an ordered set of data values. |
| Average | An average is a measure used to find the location of the middle (central tendency) of a data set. |
| Mean | Usually called the average and may be called the arithmetic mean. |
| Balance Point | Having the same weight (mass) on either side, creating the balance point in the middle. |
| Measure of Center | Measures that describe a data set by identifying the 'central' or middlemost value by a single number. |
| Outlier | A value far away from most of the rest in a set of data. |
| Histogram | A graph using bars to represent frequency distribution where, |
| Cluster | Numbers which tend to crowd around a particular point in a set of data values. |
| Counting Number | A whole number from one to infinity. |
| Whole Number | A counting number from zero to infinity, |
| Positive Number | A number greater than zero. |
| Integer | A positive number, a negative number or zero but not a fraction or a decimal fraction. |
| Negative Number | Any number less than zero. |
| Rational Number | Rational numbers are all integers, fractions, repeating decimals and terminating decimals. |
| Unit Fraction | A fraction with a numerator of 1. |
| Map Scale | A ratio between two sets of measurements. |
| Opposite | Two numbers different from each other. |
| Ordered Pair | A pair of numbers where order is important, for example, (4, 6) is different to (6, 4). |
| Coordinate Grid | Paper marked with regular lines |
| Quadrant | A quarter of a circle or its circumference. |
| Origin | The point of intersection of the x and y axis on a coordinate or Cartesian plane. |
| X-Coordinate | The position of a point according to the x axis. |
| Y-Coordinate | The position of a point according to the y axis. |
