Data Displays and Number Systems
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Data | Information that is gathered by counting, measuring, questioning, or observing. |
| Statistics | The study of numerical data: collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to interpret it and answer questions. |
| Statistical Questions | A question that would be answered by collecting or analyzing data. |
| Range | The difference between the maximum and the minimum in a data set. It is a measure of how spread out a distribution is. |
| Variability | How spread out the values in a set of data are. |
| Dot Plot | a number line long enough to encompass all numbers in a sample, showing a dot over the position corresponding to each number. |
| Data Landmark | A notable feature of a data set. Some landmarks are the mean, median, mode, maximum, minimum, and range. |
| Maximum | highest or greatest amount or value. |
| Minimum | lowest or least amount or value. |
| Distribution | The arrangement and frequency of data values in a data set. A distribution may be summarized with measures of center and variability. |
| Median | a type of average which is the middle value of an ordered set of data values. |
| Mode | a type of average. • in a set of scores, values or numbers the mode is the one that occurs the most. |
| Average | An average is a measure used to find the location of the middle (central tendency) of a data set. |
| Mean | usually called the average and may be called the arithmetic mean. |
| Balance Point | In Everyday Mathematics, for data, the balance Point is the mean. |
| Measure of Center | A value representing what is typical or central to a data set. |
| Outlier | usually called the average and may be called the arithmetic mean. |
| Histogram | a graph using bars to represent frequency distribution where, • bar heights represent the score frequencies and • there are no spaces between the bars. |
| Bin | An interval for collecting, aggregating, organizing, or graphing data. |
| Cluster | numbers which tend to crowd around a particular point in a set of data values. |
| Positive numbers | A number that is greater than zero |
| Counting number | The numbers used to count things |
| Integer | A whole number or the opposite of a whole number, where 0 is its own opposite |
| Whole number |
