Strategies we use to decode unknown words

TermDefinition
Segmenting and blending The ability to ‘memorising’ a word by mapping the relationship between the sounds in a word and the letters used to spell each sound.
Letter-sound relationships Understanding of single letter spellings, digraphs (e.g., sh, th), and commonly doubled letters (e.g., ff, zz).
Syllabification By locating vowels and divisions to break words into chunks, allowing for ease in decoding larger words.
Identifying affixes, suffixes, and base words The ability to locate and understand base or root words is a critical part of reading and spelling more complicated words. This understanding is often essential for spelling and accurate pronunciation of words.
Meaning is not used by skilled readers to identify or read individual words. However, it can help readers to self-monitor and confirm.
