Data Displays and Number Systems
| Term | Definition |

| Data | Information that is gathered by counting measuring, questioning, or observing. |
| Statistics | The study of numerical data: collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to interpret it and answer questions. |
| Variability | How spread out the values of data are. |
| Statistical question | A question that would be answered by collecting or analyzing data. |
| Range | The difference between the maximum and minimum in a data set. The range is a measure of how spread out a distribution is. |
| Dot Plot | a number line long enough to encompass all numbers in a sample, showing a dot over the position corresponding to each number. |
| Maximum | highest or greatest amount or value. |
| Distribution | the distribution of data typically takes into account the range and spread of a data set. |
| Mode | a type of average. in a set of scores, values or numbers the mode is the one that occurs the most. |
| Data Landmark | A notable feature of a data set. Some landmarks are the mean, median, mode, maximum, minimum, and range. |
| Minimum | lowest or least amount or value. |
| Median | a type of average which is the middle value of an ordered set of data values. |
| Average | A typical value for a set of numbers. The word average usually refers to the mean of a set of numbers. |
| Mean | usually called the average and may be called the arithmetic mean |
