Data displays and number systems
| Term | Definition |

| Data | information that is gathered by counting, measuring, questioning, or observing. |
| Statistics | the study of numerical data: collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to interpret it and answer questions. |
| Variability | How spread out the values in a set of data are. |
| Statistical question | a question that would be answered by collecting or analyzing data |
| Range | the difference between the maximum and the minimum in the data set. |
| dot plot | a number line long enough to encompass all numbers in a sample, showing a dot over the position corresponding to each number. |
| Distribution | the distribution of data typically takes into account the range and spread of a data set. |
| Data Landmark | a notable feature of data set some landmarks or the mean medium mode minimum and range |
| Maximum | maximum means highest or greatest amount or value |
| mode | in a set of scores, values or numbers the mode is the one that occurs the most. |
| median | a line that joins the vertex of a triangle to the midpoint of the opposite side. |
| Average | An average is a measure used to find the location of the middle (central tendency) of a data set. |
| Mean | the mean is the total of all the scores or amounts, divided by, how many scores or amounts there were. |
| Balance Point | Having the same weight (mass) on either side. |
