Data displays and number systems
Term | Definition |

Data- | Information that is gathered by counting, measuring, questioning, or observing. |
Statistics- | The study of numerical data collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to interpret it and answer questions. |
Variability | How spread out the values in a set of data are. |
Statistical question- | A question that would be answered by collecting or analyzing data. |
Range- | The difference between the maximum and the minimum in a data set The range is a measure of how spread out a distribution is. |
dot plot | a number line long enough to encompass all numbers in a sample, showing a dot over the position corresponding to each number. |
Maximum | highest or greatest amount or value |
Distribution | the distribution of data typically takes into account the range and spread of a data set. |
mode | a type of average in a set of scores, values or numbers the mode is the one that occurs the most. |
data landmark | A notable feature of a data set. Some landmarks are the mean, median, mode, maximum, minimum, and range. |
Minimum | lowest or least amount or value |
Median | a type of average which is the middle value of an ordered set of data values |
Average | An average is a measure used to find the location of the middle (central tendency) of a data set. |
mean | usually called the average and may be called the arithmetic mean. |
